#8 Grow my own salad
I first dabbled with growing vegetables in the first lockdown, like almost everyone else. I had very little idea what I was doing and the results were a bit disappointing: a handful of potatoes, half a dozen tomatoes and a couple of odd-shaped red peppers. There were also some strawberry plants, whose fruit disappeared at the moment of perfect ripeness, a mystery which was eventually solved when I caught my dog in the act of helping herself - so basically I grew my dog treat plants which I never got to taste.
This year I was better prepared. I decided to focus on basic salad ingredients, as that is what I eat most of through the summer months. I bought lettuce, tomato and cucumber seeds and filled almost every windowsill with pots.
We didn't have a heatwave like the previous year and everything took far longer to fruit than I was expecting, in fact we didn't get the opportunity to eat the tomatoes until September, but as a novice gardener it was exciting to see the tiny fruits appear and ripen. They tasted alright too!
